What causes complex regional pain syndrome?

It is believed that complex regional pain syndrome, also referred to as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), is caused by some type of damage to or malfunction in a person’s peripheral and central nervous systems. This includes the brain and spinal cord, as well as the nervous system.

The most common triggers of this are:

  • Sprains or strains
  • Burns, cuts, bruises, etc.
  • Fractures or broken bones
  • Serious surgical procedures
  • Excessive limb immobilization

Slip and falls in the workplace, vehicle accidents, and various other job-related incidents can easily led to such devastating injuries. When complex regional pain syndrome develops, it is important that the injury victim gets the necessary care and treatment they need to manage their condition.

How do I know if I have the syndrome?

If you notice changes in your skins temperature, color, or sensitivity around the injury, in addition to chronic pain, you may be suffering from complex regional pain syndrome. Pain in the limbs is common, but can also be felt in any other part of your body. The level of pain and other symptoms felt may even worsen overtime without proper treatment or monitoring by a medical professional.

In order to be diagnosed, a qualified doctor must review your medical history, examine your physical condition, and perform various other tests. It can be a difficult condition to identify without the correct training, background, and information. That is why it is so crucial that you retain a North Georgia workers’ compensation attorney who will fight to secure the right doctor for your case.
