Types of Workers' Compensation Benefits
There are workers' compensation benefits designed for several different purposes. These benefits could cover aspects of your medical care costs, your rehabilitation expense, your disability coverage and also restitution for any lost wages. You may also qualify for workers' comp benefits if you are a dependent family member of someone who lost their life while working on the job. Death benefits may be available to families through worker's compensation. The types of workers' compensation can be broken up into four different categories: medical care, disability, rehabilitation and death.
Medical Care Both Present and Future
Through workers' compensation, employees who qualify may have their hospital and medical expenses paid for. The amount which is covered may vary depending on which state you live in, but typically all doctor visits, surgery costs and medication expenses are covered.
Workers' comp is likely to cover further expenses including a wheelchair or a special vehicle if needed. In other cases where counseling, acupuncture or therapy is found necessary you may have trouble getting additional coverage. Some states allow the injury victim to choose who their health care provider will be, but they typically regulate the costs.
Rehabilitation
If your injury requires rehabilitation or physical therapy so you can recover, then those expenses would need to be covered by rehabilitation benefits. These benefits are intended to cover all the therapy needed to restore your mobility back to the level where you can return to work and perform your regular duties. If your injuries are found to be too severe, to where you cannot return to your original job, then rehabilitation benefits can go towards occupational evaluations, school tuition and training so you can find a different job.
Wage Replacement
If you are injured but not permanently disabled from your work injury, then you will receive compensation for the lost wages you suffered until you were able to return to work.
Disability
The main purpose of having disability benefits is to compensate injury victims for the wages they lost while they were unable to work the duties of their job. These benefits are given out in different increments depending on how severe your injury is and whether or not you will be able to return to work and perform your work duties to the full capacity.
The four different categories include the following:
- Temporary total disability
- Temporary partial disability
- Permanent total disability
- Permanent partial disability
If you fall in any of the above categories, then your injury may warrant you disability benefits of some capacity. The benefits that you will receive will be based on 2/3 of the amount of wages you earned prior to your injury. Fortunately, you will not be taxed on these benefits.
Vocational Training
If injuries are keeping you from returning to your normal job, then you should be able to undergo vocation training to help you qualify for a job that is less physically demanding.
Death
For people who are related to a deceased worker, such as a spouse, child, sibling or parent, the system will usually grant death benefits. The intention of death benefits is to not only provide the family restitution for burial and funeral costs, but mainly to compensate family dependents who have suffered a loss of income and support. If parents were financially dependent on the deceased worker, then they may be able to receive benefits as well.
